This summer, let your kids discover the drum beats that shock the heart and explore the percussive rhythms that warp the mind. I’m not talking about the dance atmosphere in a local night club. Rather, kids aged 5-12 will have the groovy opportunity to hone their percussion skills with Li Biao, China’s renowned drum master. The one-day summer camp and performance will take place July 18 at the Grand Theatre.

Considered as one of the most professional drum masters in the percussion world, Li Biao is prestigious for his outstanding performance and unique comprehension. Li’s debut in the music world began with his pounding on a wooden bench when he was 5 years old. He quickly showed an amazing talent and became a soloist in the China National Symphony Orchestra when he was only 7 years old. Currently a music professor, Li, along with his percussion group, performed at the 2008 Olympics closing ceremony in Beijing. With a passion for teaching younger generations, Li’s teaching philosophy includes the idea that one can begin playing a percussion instrument at an early age and make quick progress.

At this one-day summer camp, Li and his staff will train the students, who will be expected to present what they learned, performing a small concert at the end of the day. The summer camp is part of the “Open the Gates of Art”, a series of educational summer camps for children to be held at the Grand Theatre.
